OMEGA SUVERÄN 30-T2 2400-4 Gents Vintage Stainless Steel Watch 1944- RARE
An extremely rare and highly collectible Omega Suverän stainless steel manual wristwatch manufactured solely for the Swedish civilian market 80 years ago during World War II in 1944. It houses the revered 30-T2 SC 15 jewel movement, which aside from the Swedish connection, is a highly collectible model. The Suverän translates as Sovereign, to denote Sweden’s neutrality in World War II. Manufacturecd in 1944, this model was made by Omega on demand by the Swedish government in the early 1940’s. The Swedish government wanted to sell the watch to the Swedish public during WW II in order to boost the Swedish economy and to finance the armed forces as an alternative to war bonds. Consequently, you will hardly ever see this model coming up for sale. As an avid vintage watch collector and dealer spanning more than 30 years, this is the first Suverän I have owned. Do your own research to see the prices some sellers on various websites are asking for the Suverän. This timepiece is in great overall condition, presenting very well on the wrist and the freshly oiled and adjusted movement is running strongly and keeping time. The 30-T2 SC mechanism is rarely seen today due to its age. Introduced in 1939, production for the civilian population during World War 2 was limited due to supplying the war effort. 110,000 of these models went to the British government. Approximately 200,000 Omega watches were produced annually between 1939 and the end of 1945, compared to some 1 million annually in later years. I have not been able to find any information about the number of. Suverän models produced but taking into account the foregoing. This watch is indeed a very rare find. The watch is signed three times, on the dial, case and movement. Crowns on Omega 30-T2 watches from the 1940’s were not signed. The 30-T2 is considered to be one of Omega’s finest movements. So outstanding was its performance, that it was the most accurate calibre ever tested at the Neuchatel, Geneva and Kew testing observatories, winning first place for precision in 1946. Iterations of this movement, known as the 2 series, continued right up until the 1960’s. Please scroll down to see more photographs and details and send a message to ask any questions. Dial : finished in two tone satin silver with a black hours ring (often called a Panda dial), signed “Omega Swiss Made” togther with the Omega emblem. Luminous Arabic numerals mark the hours. The luminous hands are in good shape and the crystal is clean and clear. This factory original dial had radium numerals and hands so I decided to have the dial restored to a high standard to accurately replicate the original finish and enable the watch to be used on a daily basis if desired. Case : stainless steel, in very good condition, measuring approximately 35 mm across, excluding the crown and 42 mm from lug to lug. It is signed Omega Suverän on the outside of the cover and also signed on the inside. The case shows the inevitable signs of ucareful use over the years but nothing that I could see of any significance to point out to you. Movement : Omega 15 jewel 30-T2 SC manual movement which is marked shock proof, antimagnetic and waterproof (not guaranteed today). It is freshly oiled and adjusted, running strongly and keeping time. The serial number dates the watch to 1944. Strap : fitted with a generic black leather strap which attached to the watch measures approximately 219 mm from buckle tip to last hole. Omega Watch Company History. The Omega Watch Company is one of the most famous high end watch brands, highly sought after by people looking for well made, reliable timepieces. The company has its roots in. Where it was formed by Louis Brandt in 1848. The first watch to bear the Omega name was in 1894. The name was adopted by the company as a whole in 1903. Today the firm belongs to the Swiss watch trust of SHM. The company has been the official timekeeper for 21 Olympic Games and has been the supplier of watches to the NASA space programme since 1965. A manual Omega Speedmaster was worn by Neil Armstrong on the first successful lunar expedition when an astronaut stepped out onto the lunar landscape at 0256 GMT on 21st July 1969. Omega has continued to develop its reputation for precision and innovation, presenting the world’s first self-winding wristwatch with central tourbillon (launched in 1994) and the revolutionary coaxial escapement, developed in conjunction with renowned English master watchmaker George Daniels, first offered in a limited series in 1999. Alternatively I will undertake any repairs that are necessary if the watch is damaged or if in any other way differs significantly from the description. If I have not stated that the watch has been serviced, you may wish to have this work done, particularly if you intend to wear the watch on a daily basis. On request, I can provide you with details of independent watchmakers to whom you can send your watch for servicing. I provide comprehensive details of my watches, including very clear photographs taken with a high resolution macro lens which shows detail not visible to the naked eye. I also invite you to ask questions if there is anything else you need to know. Please take care to consider the dimensions of the watch case as if it is a gentlemans’ Art Deco rectangular vintage watch, they were made significantly smaller than contemporary watches. Please do not expect quartz accuracy from a vintage watch. In the 1940’s/1950’s the accepted timekeeping tolerance for a new 17 jewel manual watch was within three minutes a day. All of my watches are professionally inspected and tested before sale and if they are not running smoothly and keeping reasonable time I have them serviced and/ or have any other work undertaken that is needed to ensure the watch is in running condition. Please also note that I provide no guarantee that my watches are waterproof. I would always strongly recommend keeping any vintage well away from moisture.
